Michael Taylor
As one of the pioneers of the studio glass movement, Michael Taylor opened the door for glass as a creative means of expression, not only as a craft but as a form of metaphysical geometry, as true sculptural art. His vast body of work – spanning forty-five years – demonstrates not only his mastery of the science of glass, but how well he has learned to grasp its poetry and symbolism.
In Taylor's hands, the hard reality of glass is transformed into ever-changing light and energy.
For over twenty years, Taylor served as professor and chair of the Glass Department in the School for American Crafts at Rochester Institute of Technology. He has taught and lectured at numerous national and international institutions of higher education, workshops, museums and foundations, and been the recipient of many prestigious awards, including fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Fulbright-Hays program and the Danforth Foundation. His prodigious output as a glass artist – in the midst of his many professional and administrative duties – has been remarkable.
