Michael Wyshock: Between Zero & One Opens 4th Art Season at Alfstad& Contemporary
SARASOTA, FL Sept 8, 2016 – Alfstad& Contemporary presents the inaugural show of its fourth season, Between Zero and One, a solo exhibition of works by artist Michael Wyshock, in which he examines the space that exists between spaces, and how those spaces are altered when objects are realigned in both color and form. The Opening Night reception is September 30th and the exhibit runs through October 28th.
“Between Zero and One highlights Michael’s intellectual and intuitive color, layering and manipulation techniques,” says Sam Alfstad of Alfstad& Contemporary. “His work is adventurous, showcasing art that displays depth, texture and a refinement that is visually stimulating.”
“My work focuses on the navigation and exploration of external and internal space, somewhere between zero and one,” says Wyshock, “I explore this space through fractal language in painting, drawing and video.”
Wyshock has been exploring his interest for mathematics and fractal art for the past twenty years. Between Zero and One completes this transition to the hard-edge; his fascination with pixels, spacing, parallels of colors, formats and visual vibrations through a pattern of logic.
The exhibition includes paintings, serigraph prints and a video animation featuring hand-drawn images by Wyshock that were previously seen traveling through space in his seven-hour video animation, “The Stars are Too Close” -- a commissioned work that was recently debuted at the Blue Balls Festival in Lucerne, Switzerland. The new works, created for Between Zero and One, have been deconstructed from that video, manipulated, reconstructed and translated to art on paper using a combination of silk-screen, digital and hand-embellishing techniques. The result is a series of original 12” x 15” prints that display a complex and balanced composition of fractal and polygonal shapes, digital lines and colors. The special series of prints were created in collaboration with Alfstad& Contemporary at its Sarasota studio.
As an accompaniment to the Wyshock video animation featured in /& Backspace, New Orleans band Crush Diamond will be performing new original music throughout the evening of the opening. The music is a collaboration of Anthony Bergeron Jr., Marc Miller and Jeremy Zeringue.
This is Wyshock’s second solo exhibition at the Alfstad& Contemporary, Devil’s Swamp was shown in February 2015. His work also appeared in a group showing of /& Collaborations in early 2016.
